BAIGORRI MATURANA 2018

Bodegas Baigorri is located in the town of Samaniego under the Sierra de Cantabria, a unique spot in Rioja Alavesa. The winery looks like an enormous glass box surrounded by vineyards in an incomparable setting for vine growing.

The winery contains seven hidden levels below the surface where the whole wine process takes place, using gravity principles. Both traditional and modern methods are applied for obtaining premium wines. The grapes come from old vines and are picked by hand. Rioja Alavesa is the subregion north of the river Ebro in the Basque province of Alava. This area is the closest subzone to the Atlantic Ocean. Cooling effects of the sea combined with chalky clay and limestone soils determine the quality of the wines. Although tempranillo is the main grape, maturana tinta, a powerful, age worthy grape has been included in the DOC. Maturana tinta should not be confused with maturana blanca which originates from Rioja. DNA has shown that the maturana tinta is the same variety as trousseau from the Jura in eastern France.

This deep dark colored wine attacks with rich notes of oak, inner black fruit, herbs and subtle pepper. The palate starts with flavours of ripe cherries, full-bodied, with nice acidity and rich tannins, well integrated, vibrant alcohol ending in a long savoury finish with a touch of bitterness.
